MeKong Hotel is in Hon Gai, the older centre on the east bank of Ha Long city, where the streets mix shophouses, small cafés and family restaurants. The Kênh Liêm canal junction is 350 m away and the Quang Ninh Museum is 750 m, so the old quarter is an easy walk from the guest house. The Ha Long Martyrs Memorial, 700 m away, and Chợ Cao Thắng market, 950 m away, are both within a kilometre, which makes the neighbourhood practical for both errands and sightseeing. Bai Chay, the main tourist area on the west bank, is across the water.
Since the property has no parking, a taxi is the simplest way to arrive with luggage. The public beach of Hòn Gai (Bãi tắm công cộng Hòn Gai) is 3.8 km away, and Bai Chay Beach, the main resort beach of the city, is 4.5 km away that links the two banks.
For sightseeing, Lan Be Park, 1.1 km away, is a green break from the traffic, and the Tháp Đồng Hồ clock tower, 1.4 km away, and the Đền Quan Sơn temple, 1.5 km away, make a short loop through the old quarter. The Quang Ninh Museum covers the history of the province, and the streets around it are a good place to see the older part of Hon Gai on foot. Bai Chay Beach suits a half-day by the sea, and the Bai Chay side of the city has the larger choice of restaurants and cafés for an evening out.
